PASTOR JEFF'S PONDERINGS

Is the end in sight?

1/21/2016

How do you feel about the outlook for the coming year? I've heard a lot of people who are bracing themselves for bad news. And there are certainly plenty of negative events and trends that we could get caught up in and overwhelmed by. So what should we do and how should we feel?

Jesus actually addressed the last days in chapter 24 of the Gospel of Matthew. It's not a rosy picture, but there's some important things to consider. That's what Don Wallis will be helping us to focus on this coming Sunday, January 24th. No matter what may be coming, we can have confidence that Jesus is still in control and he loves us!

Jeff and Tim are off to Chicago

Picture
This coming week is the Covenant Midwinter Conference in Chicago. This annual gathering of Covenant pastors is a time of learning, encouragement, and renewal.  Tim will be attending the Youth Worker Connection over the weekend and I will be attending the week-long conference which begins on Monday.
Portions of the event will be broadcast online, so you can enjoy some fantastic speakers from the comfort of your snowed-in home!  Simply go to  covchurch.org/midwinter and you can be there with me (sort of).
There will be seven live broadcasts:
– 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday: Opening worship service, the Brilliance will lead worship.
– 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday: CovTalks
– 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday: Ministry update by President Gary Walter
– 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday: Worship service, R. York Moore speaking.
– 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday: Worship service, Bill Henson speaking
– 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday: Worship service, Jo Ann Barton speakiing
– 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday: Worship service, Ruth Haley Barton speaking
– 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Friday, Mark DeYmaz speaking
I've adjusted the times to PST.  Some sessions may be available afterwards in the archive.

You can also follow events and join in discussions throughout the day on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #midwinter16

Just Believe?

1/14/2016

On Wednesday three people won the Powerball Lottery. They'll be splitting the $1.5 billion dollar prize. Even after the majority of it is taken away in taxes, each of the winners will come out with hundreds of millions of dollars!  Wow!
I wonder how many people bought tickets and didn't win anything. I wonder how many of them sincerely believed that they were going to win. I wonder how many of those people will continue to purchase lottery tickets convinced that they will win a big jackpot eventually.
How much you believe in something or someone is not as important as what or whom you are putting your faith in.  I'm sure there are plenty of people who truly believe that buying lotto tickets is the best investment in their future that they can make...

This Sunday, January 17th, we'll be talking about faith and choosing to believe the truth. I hope you'll be able to join us (and that you'll be able to watch a dvr'd recording of the Seahawks game).

Crisis Fund

Our church crisis fund was established in order for us to be able to help people within our congregation and community who find themselves in need.  Each year we've been able to distribute thousands of dollars to assist in paying bills and meet other unexpected challenges. The crisis fund depends primarily on special contributions from members of our congregation with only a small part coming from our general fund.
After a run of resent requests we're in need of building up our account once again to be prepared for needs that will inevitably come.  Please consider making a special contribution. You can write a check with a note designating it to the crisis fund and drop it by the church or place it into the offering.  You can also give online by following this link
and designating "Crisis Fund" in the giving type. Thanks for helping us to help those in need.

Just who do you think you are?

1/7/2016

What do you see when you look into the mirror? Unfortunately, most of us don't have the same experience as this kitty. If anything, we experience the opposite thing.  We have been made new creations in Christ and are accepted, secure and significant. But we feel beat down and unable to find the joy, freedom, and abundant life-to-the-full that Jesus promised (John 10:10).
This Sunday, January 10th, we'll be continuing our series we're calling "Free Way" and focusing on who you and I are now that Christ has saved us.  It's all a matter of believing the TRUTH!
